In summer, the Tatras pulse with life. The sun shines into every corner, the trails are alive with conversations, and the streams carry the scent of coolness and mountain air. Among the Tatra valleys, there is one that still manages to surprise – quiet, green, and hiding a fascinating history. The Biały Valley is a place where a summer walk turns into a small adventure – with a touch of mystery, the sound of the stream, and the shadow of stone walls.

Holiday route close to the center of Zakopane

The Biały Valley begins almost in the heart of Zakopane – right at the exit of Droga pod Reglami. It takes just a few minutes' walk from Krupówki to leave the city buzz behind and enter a world of greenery and the sound of water. It is one of the most easily accessible valleys of the Western Tatras, perfect for a summer walk with family, a camera, or simply a desire to relax. In summer, the trail is especially friendly. It runs along the Biały stream, whose name comes from the limestone rocks that give the water a milky shade. On hot days, this stream provides relief – moisture lingers in the air, and the shade of spruces protects from the sun.

Water, rock, and coolness – a valley like a refuge

Walking up the valley, one has the impression that every step leads deeper into silence. The stream babbles on one side, limestone walls with fantastic shapes rise on the other. In many places, the water forms natural cascades, some of which can even be called miniature waterfalls. In summer, when the Tatras can be heated to the limits, the Biały Valley feels like a cool corridor – a perfect place to catch your breath. The walk up the valley takes about an hour, but it’s worth slowing down. Stop by the little bridge, listen to the echo, look closely at the marks on the rocks. Because in this valley, everything has its story.

A history that is still alive

Few people know that the Biały Valley hides relics of former uranium prospecting. In the second half of the 20th century, mining work was carried out in the valley’s rocks to reveal deposits of this valuable element. Although mining was quickly abandoned, traces of old adits and entrances to one of them can still be seen (naturally with caution). It is an extraordinary fragment of Tatra history – a combination of nature and industrial past. In the shade of the forest, where tourists now stroll, geologists and miners once worked. The Biały Valley shows that the Tatras are not only nature but also humanity, which has tried to understand them for centuries.

A waterfall that cools the senses
